ETP SLOVAKIA TO COLLECT AWARD IN BRUSSELS TOMORROW
The ETP Slovakia – Center for Sustainable Development non-profit organization is one of the winners of the competition for the European Economic and Social Committee’s Civil Society Prize 2014. This is awarded by the EESC in Brussels with the aim of acknowledging and encouraging initiatives with tangible results developed by civil society organizations and individuals as well which have contributed significantly to the promotion of European identity and integration. Representatives of ETP Slovakia will be collecting their prize in Brussels tomorrow, October 16, personally from EESC President Henri Malossa. ETP has been working with marginalized communities in Eastern Slovakia for more than 14 years. It runs community centers set up in cooperation with local self-government bodies, providing social services for disadvantaged population groups. The organization’s project called Let’s Build Hope was nominated for the prize by EESC members Michal Pintér and Juraj Stern, and it caught the jury’s attention with its innovative and creative approach to resolving the housing problems faced by young families on low incomes in marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia. The project focuses on the most active and highly motivated people from the settlements, who are then given help and provided with loans to be repaid over a ten-year period so that they can build their own houses on legally-owned plots of land. This project has been supported by several organizations, including U. S. Steel Košice.
