Between April 5 and 8 of this year U. S. Steel Košice underwent its first recertification audit for the implementation of its Energy Management System in line with the standard EN ISO 50001:2012, which was carried out by the TÜV SÜD Slovakia certification company. As he confirmed at the closing meeting, chief auditor Marián Harčarik and his team found that our Company meets the requirements of the EnMS standard. He based his statement mainly on the finding that it fulfills the principal criterion, which is to demonstrate continuous improvement in the efficiency of processes, including reducing the share of energy costs in the total costs per hot-rolled coil produced.
“We've had the opportunity to see your work on the other objectives involving cost-saving, and we were pleasantly surprised by what you achieved last year in this direction, and what you have planned for this year too,” he said on behalf of his team, emphasizing the efforts of the Košice steelmakers, and he presented a series of positive findings made by the auditors. One of them is without a doubt the system introduced in the area of occupational safety focusing on orderliness in the workplace.
The auditors included among the essential strong points the quality of record-keeping in the EnMS and its implementation with regard to other systems, the preparation of energy management programs and individual action plans in the units concerned with energy issues in the divisions and plants, and the establishment of a separate unit for managing energy efficiency, which is of fundamental importance from the point of view of planning and monitoring this issue.
