We need qualified specialists

Possibilities for studying at secondary schools and universities, extracurricular courses and pre-school education as well as job opportunities were on offer at the first edition of the Pro Educo exhibition on education, IT penetration and careers, which took place last week from November 20th - 22nd in the House of Technology in Kosice. Among the more than 30 exhibitors comprising employers, staffing agencies, extracurricular education organizations, universities and specialist secondary schools in the Kosice and Presov regions, there was a presentation on a shared stand by U. S. Steel Kosice and the Metallurgical Vocational School in Kosice-Saca. "Our common goal is to increase interest among pupils and their parents in specialist education, and to direct their attention to the possibilities on offer in this area by the MVS. Qualified and skilled specialist workers are getting scarcer on the job market," observed Recruitment Manager Miroslav Fedor from the Department of GM Human Resources Development and Servicing at USSK.

Interest in environment and memory training

The best part of 40 teachers from elementary schools in Kosice accepted the invitation to one of the specialist events accompanying the international festival of films on sustainable development, Ekotopfilm 2007, which took place in Kosice last week following its run in Bratislava. The general sponsor of the event, which has a history dating back 34 years, is U. S. Steel Kosice. The conference on the theme of Education for Environment and Ethics in Schools and Educational Institutions proceeded in a spirit of mutual exchange of information and experience and assessment of the state of environmental education, and of the popularizing and promotion of environmental activities being carried out at various stages in the educational process. There was especial interest in another of the Festival's accompanying events - a specialist lecture by the Memory Foundation on the topic How and Why We Should Look After Our Memory, combined with a presentation of memory training for people in productive age, including issues of forgetfulness as a symptom of illness. Alzheimer's Disease was discovered a hundred years ago, and according to the World Health Organization it is set to become one of the greatest problems for medicine in the future.

Artwork by children

From the point of view of the pupils in Poproc Elementary School, the basic idea of their project named Safety in School, as part of U. S. Steel Kosice's grant program More Safely in Schools, is to involve children in defining the priorities, rules and regulations which they are supposed to keep to during their time spent on school premises, so that they perceive them as their own rules of behavior. The project is divided into three stages. This October and November they have completed the artwork part of the project, which 224 pupils at the school joined in. The children illustrated the theme of safety and safe behavior in school, and their pictures will be presented in an exhibition and in a calendar.
