EMS audit turns out well
In the last few days auditors from the certification company TÜV NORD Slovakia s.r.o. came to U. S. Steel Kosice to analyze and assess the processes of the
Company's environmental management system as part of the second review audit. According to the auditors' report, the requirements of the TÜV NORD certification criteria for declaring compliance
with the internationally-binding standard EN ISO 14001 are not only fulfilled by the Company, but in many cases in fact significantly exceeded.
The Company's strong points which they identified are, among others, the method of planning and setting both long- and short-term goals and programs, maintaining the
current environmental limits, demonstrable improvement due to the application of capital investment for environmental protection, and the building and modernization of the information and
monitoring system. They also praised the attitude of the Kosice steelworks to the implementation of European legal requirements concerning the manner of handling chemical substances (REACH).
Kosice has first professional skate park in Slovakia
Last weekend a new skate park with an area of 880 m2 was opened at the Fun-Sports Area on Alejova Street in Kosice. This unique full-concrete skate park is the first
of its kind in Slovakia, and is intended for beginners and advanced skaters alike. This park has been created from the bed of the former lake, and is the result of several months of effort by the
East Side Skates civic association. This project was completed thanks to joint financial support to the tune of around four million Slovak crowns from Kosice City South Ward, Kosice City Hall,
U. S. Steel Kosice, the SR Government Offics and the Kosice Self-governing Region.
The official opening of the skate park was attended by SR Prime Minister Robert Fico, National Council Chairman Pavol Paska, Deputy Mayor of Kosice Marek Vargovcak,
U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke and other guests. In the past the Kosice steel company has sponsored the reconstruction of the traffic playground here, the building of
three multi-purpose playing fields with artificial grass surfaces, a mobile ice-rink and an amphitheater.
