Awards for U. S. Steel Kosice
In the first edition of the annual competition entitled "Superior in School - Successful in Life", organized by the Slovak Entrepreneurs' Association, U. S. Steel Kosice gained first place for the most innovative cooperation with the developing Slovakian school system, as well as the award from the fortnightly magazine Profit, the competition's media partner, for the project with the most significant impact on the development of entrepreneurial education. A further award for the Kosice steel company for long-term, all-round cooperation with several secondary schools and application of the Company's business principles in the field of secondary education, was presented last Friday, October 24th in Bratislava at an official event attended by European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Jan Figel.
Firms clamor for well-educated graduates
Dialog between the entrepreneurial and the academic spheres was the focus of the event named "Business and Academia: Bridging the Gap", organized by American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham) on Monday, October 27th. This event, sponsored by U. S. Steel Kosice, was also attended by European Commission member, Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Jan Figel. Just like U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, Vice President Human Resources Martin Pitorak, and Pro-Rector for Science and Research at the Technical University in Kosice, Stanislav Kmet, he emphasized the need for interlinking companies with education, which must be able to react to market requirements. The representatives of the Kosice steel company presented examples of cooperation with secondary technical and vocational schools, and with colleges and universities.
Refrako gets certificates
In the last few days U. S. Steel Kosice subsidiary Refrako s.r.o. successfully completed the second renewal audit of their quality management system in line with EN ISO 9001:2000, and after more than a year of effort, as the first production-based subsidiary, they also gained a certificate for their environmental management system. Both certificates, in the opinion of Refrako's General Director Gabriel Torhany, will reinforce the company's competitive position on the market for refractory materials.
Grand Prix Ekotopfilm 2008 awards presented
Bratislava was the venue last week for the 35th edition of the annual international festival of sustainable development films, Ekotopfilm 2008. The principal sponsor of this event, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the world, was U. S. Steel Kosice. This year's audiences could see the best part of 100 films in the competition, and the best films will also be presented in Kosice between November 11th and 14th. The U. S. Steel Kosice Award in category A - popular-scientific films - was won by the French entry named "In the Name of Roses".
