U. S. Steel Kosice gains SR National Quality Award 2010

U. S. Steel Kosice has been declared the winner of the Slovak Republic's National Quality Award for 2010 in the category A1 - manufacturing companies with more than 251 employees. The President of the Company was informed of this result in the last few days by the Director of the SR Office for Normalization, Metrology and Testing Jozef Mihók. The winner was selected by the competition's evaluation panel in line with the competition articles, based on the results of evaluation on the organization's premises. This is the second time the Kosice steelworks has won this award in the last ten years. The last time the Company competed successfully was in 2002. The official announcement of the competition results will be taking place in the historical building of the SR National Council in Bratislava on November 8th, 2010.

Certificate for another year

U. S. Steel Kosice has successfully undergone a review audit of its environmental management system, which was carried out at the steelworks recently by the certification company TÜV NORD Slovakia. The auditors analyzed, assessed and verified the processes of the environmental management system and their compliance with the requirements of the internationally-binding standard EN ISO 14001. They then confirmed the validity of the certificate for a further period of one year.

Kosice Marathon record broken by three runners

Such a thing has never happened in the history of the Kosice Peace Marathon to date. Not only was the course record, held since 2007 by the Kenyan William Biama with a time of 2h09m53s, broken on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010, but it was beaten by three marathoners from Kenya in the same race with superb times below 2h09m. The winner Gilbert Chepkwony breasted the finish tape in a time of 2h08m33s, the second-placed Solomon Bushendich completed the two circuits of the city course in 2h08m40s, and the third at the finish Peter Chebet achieved a time of 2h08m42s. All three set new personal best times in Kosice.
The brightly-colored pelotons in the half-marathon and marathon races also featured steelmakers. Just like last year, two American managers Michael L. Simko and A. Bradley Cramer, jr. lined up at the start this year as well. Michael Simko did the better of the two. Amidst strong competition he finished in 349th place with an excellent time of 3h42m52s. This represents rapid improvement over last year, when he reached the finish in a time of 4h14m22s.
