U. S. Steel Corporation President and CEO Mario Longhi visits Kosice steelmakers
The President and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Steel Corporation Mario Longhi recently spent a working stay in Europe which included a meeting with Kosice steelmakers. He had a full program during his brief stopover in the Company, consisting mainly of familiarizing himself with the instruments of the Carnegie, Our Way initiative. On Thursday, August 21, he looked round the Company's primary operations, then took part in a meeting in the War Room, where working groups give reports on the current state of projects involved in the transformation process here. On Friday, August 22, he discussed ongoing events in the Corporation with U. S. Steel Kosice managers.
Timmy R. West leaves Kosice after 14 years
He can easily call Slovakia is second home. Timmy R. West has spent the last fourteen years in Kosice. His first contact with our steelworks came in 1999, when he worked here as a member of the acquisition team. Once the works became part of the U. S. Steel Corporation, in 2000 he became General Manager Accounting, then he was involved in the ERP project, and since 2007 he has worked as Deputy GM Strategic Raw Materials Procurement. This position was also his last, because on August 31 he took his retirement after 37 years of service in the Corporation.
More than forty works in metal exhibited in Kosice's STM
Original artworks made out of metal, created by young designers during this year's international Metal Inspirations workshop, are now being exhibited in the Slovakian Technical Museum in Kosice. The official opening took place in the early evening of last Wednesday, August 27, attended by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, Vice Rector for Science and Research at the Technical University of Kosice Stanislav Kmet, and the Principal of the Kosice-Saca Metallurgical Vocational School Jozef Sablatura. Not by chance either. The twelve annual editions of this event to date are the result of successful cooperation between these same three institutions, which the speakers confirmed in their speeches to the workshop participants and the guests. The designers' works are going to serve a good cause as well, because interested buyers will be able to bid for them in an auction to be organized by the steelmaking company, the proceeds of which will be used for charitable purposes.
Start of the XXIV Summer Games for USSK employees
The end of this week will be devoted to sports activities by the employees of U. S. Steel Kosice. From September 4 - 6 the recreational sportspeople among them will be meeting for the 24th time now at sportsgrounds where they will compete in eleven sporting disciplines. Another two sports, golf and softball, will be contested at later dates. The golfers meet on the greens of the nine-hole gold course at Mala Ida on Sunday, September 14, and the softball matches will be played on the Technical University pitch on Vysokoskolska Street on Saturday, September 20. The first to join battle at 4 pm today are the bowling and badminton competitors, since there is the greatest interest in these sports. The registered participants in bowling have once again reached a record number of 372 people, and 52 people are entering the badminton tournament. Further competitions get under way on Friday, September 5.
